To You and Yours: A Valentine’s Day 2018 Playlist by Ratha David Loun
February 14th. Valentine’s Day to those of us with dates and Singles Awareness Day to those of us without. Some of us are looking for love, some of us are looking for closure. According to Statistic Brain, with research being as recent as September of last year, approximately 13.3 billion is spent on Valentine’s Day annually. Yes you read that correctly; billion not million. The average consumer spends $116.21. It is a common theory amongst men that Valentine’s Day is a commercial holiday made by women so they get showered with gifts, but here is an interesting statistic that supports this claim. Did you know according to Statistic Brain 53% of women would end their relationship if they didn’t get a gift for Valentine’s Day? I’m not sure I believe that, but I’m not sure it’s false at the same time. The actual history of Valentine’s Day has Roman-Catholic and Christian origins. Though no one is 100% sure on the history of V-Day, one story suggests Valentine was a priest in Rome who would wed young lovers in secrecy because marriage was banned during the third century. When Valentine was caught, he was put to death.
Regardless of the actual history of Valentine’s Day, what we do know is that modern romance celebrates it every year without fail. A few more interesting statistics include 198 million roses produced for Valentine’s Day each year, 14% of women send flowers to themselves, and 11,000 children are thought to be conceived on February 14th annually. To celebrate, I made a playlist containing 14 songs that would be a good listen while you and your date are on your way to dinner. These songs are meaningful, romantic, and most all, these songs celebrate love. I have also included a link to the Apple formatted playlist for my fellow Apple Music subscribers. As for all my single peeps, save your money and good luck next year.
