A Few Fortunes for Thought, 9.26.18

I remixed eat it before you beat it to eat it before you read it. Those are two cardinal rules I follow in this life of mine. Today we will be talking about the latter. I never read my fortune until I have eaten the cookie. I may not be that religious or spiritual, but I most definitely am superstitious. Doesn’t make sense, right? Nothing seems to these days.

Fortune cookies are essential to Chinese take out. It’s something to look forward to after the meal. I can’t remember my first fortune cookie experience, but I can remember beginning to collect them in high school. I have hundreds; perhaps thousands of fortunes due to the number of times I frequent Chinese take out. Some are complimentary, some are prophetic. I agree to those that speak highly of me and look forward to those that predict my future. A few fortunes have lucky numbers. I usually spend a brief few seconds attempting to relate and resonate those numbers into my life somehow, as if it’ll make my fortune more honest than it may have seemed upon first reading.  I believe more in fortunes from fortune cookies than horoscopes as arbitrary as a fortune hiding inside of a cookie is.

From upper west-side Manhattan, to St. Louis, to Los Angeles, all the way back to Apex and everywhere in between, here are a handful of my favorite fortunes I’ve collected over the years.
